Richmond Kickers recreational season to kick off

Kickers Rec Season Kicks Off in Style September 10 & 17

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to host the third annual Recstravaganza to kick off the 2011 fall recreational soccer season.  Due to the rapid growth of the Richmond Kickers rec program, Recstravaganza will be held over two weekends, with the beautiful 80-acre natural grass complex, Hensley Park, hosting the opening weekend this Saturday, September 10.  The Kickers state-of-the-art sports complex, Ukrop Park, will host Recstravaganza for the Providence Middle School, Union Theological Seminary and Ukrop Park programs on Saturday, September 17.  Recstravaganza will feature delicious food from Papa John’s, giveaways, prizes and Kickeroo, with a combined 150 rec teams taking the field over the two weekends.

Lining up from the first tee at Independence Golf Club, NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Elliott Sadler stuck his drive within just a few yards of the pin, setting the bar high for the media he challenged today. Sadler stopped by the Richmond-area golf course for a friendly contest, along with Richmond International Raceway, to promote the upcoming “One Last Race to Make The Chase” NASCAR weekend, September 9-10.

Sadler, a Virginia native who will run the Friday, September 9, Virginia 529 College Savings 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway, is an avid golfer, but has been focused on his series championship run. He is currently third in the driver point standings, behind Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Reed Sorenson.

Kayak excursions

The Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a tidal lagoon paddle, Saturday, June 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Explore the Dutch Gap Conservation Area by kayak with a naturalist. Paddle to the Graveyard, Islands and the Labyrinth, searching for great blues, bald eagles, osprey and other denizens of the tidal lagoon. Fee includes interpretive guide, canoe or sit-on-top kayak, and accessory gear.

Minimum age is 8. An adult must accompany children aged 8 -14. Paddling time is approximately 2 hours; participants will meet at the Henricus Historical Park Visitor Center, 251 Henricus Park Road. The cost is $18 per person. For more information, or to register, call 318-8735.

Local Junior Golfers Heading to Pebble Beach for Nature Valley First Tee Open

            Gavin Parker and Jason Park of The First Tee of Richmond-Chesterfield have been selected to play in the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
Parker, age 18, attends Monacan High School and has been playing golf for seven years.

Bend it like Beckham this summer

The Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering local youth soccer players the opportunity to bend it like Beckham this summer—without the distraction of vuvuzelas.

The Challenger British Soccer camp will help develop soccer skills for youths aged 7-12 through individual and small-group practices and coached games. Instructors will emphasize character development, respect and sportsmanship. Learn from some of the best British college and semipro coaches.

The camp will run Monday-Friday, June 27-July 1, from 9 a.m. to noon at Midlothian Middle School, 13501 Midlothian Turnpike. The cost per camper is $125. For more information, or to register, contact Sharon Entsminger, 804-748-1126.

Community outreach program provides free self-defense seminar

Chesterfield Baptist Church is offering a free self-defense seminar on Wednesday, May 25, 7-8pm, at 16520 Hull Street Rd, Moseley, Va in their fellowship hall.  This event is open to the public, 8 years of age and above, RSVP is not required. 

“This event is a part of Chesterfield Baptist Church’s community outreach program that offers resources to the public free of charge to better family life.  We have partnered with Dynamic Taekwondo of Woodlake to come and lead our program,” said Rev.

Reminder: Golf Tournament

A reminder that the Chesterfield Sheriff's Office and Department of Parks and Recreation will be hosting their annual golf tournament to benefit Special Olympics Virginia, Monday, April 25, at the Highlands Golf Course.

Check in begins at noon on April 25, with play beginning at 1 p.m. The deadline to register has passed.
