Ceremony for new Chesterfield parkland Friday

The Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation, along with the Capital Region Land Conservancy, will recognize the donation of a 113-acre parcel of land to the county from the estate of Paul and Anna Atkins at a ceremony on Friday, Sept. 23, 2:30 p.m., at the Southwest Church of God, 5340 Courthouse Road.

The parcel is designated for eventual use as a county park, and contains uplands and frontage along several streams, which are protected by a riparian buffer zone. Thirty percent of the land will be developed into a park, with the remaining 70 percent protected in its forested natural state.

This event is not open to the public.

Chesterfield County ZIP Code Boundary Review

As a result of the ZIP Code Boundary Review requested by the Chesterfield County Administrator’s office, the following addressing options will be available beginning June 15, 2011.

“North Chesterfield, VA” will become an acceptable (or alternate) community name to be used in the last line of the mailing address for Chesterfield County residents in ZIP Codes 23224, 23225, 23234, 23235, 23236 and 23237, while “Richmond, VA” will remain as the preferred (or primary) name within the address.  Also, Chesterfield County residents in ZIP Codes 23803 and 23834 may use “South Chesterfield” as an acceptable community name while “Richmond, VA” will remain as the preferred name.

A formal change-of-address filing will not be required or accepted from residents as a result of this change.  Media inquiries should be made to Chesterfield County at 804-748-1211.

Redistricting expected by late April

In late February, Chesterfield County received official 2010 population data for the county from the U.S. Bureau of the Census. This population data confirmed that Chesterfield County will need to redistrict its five magisterial districts in order to equalize the population among the districts. Currently, the population in the five districts is as follows:

— Bermuda, 66,596
— Clover Hill, 55,546
— Dale, 60,211
— Matoaca, 75,136
— Midlothian, 58,747

Updating the comprehensive plan

Community members and school leaders will prepare to start updating the school system’s Design for Excellence comprehensive plan during a workshop with Gary Marx, president of the Center for Public Outreach.

The workshop will be 4:30-8 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 20) at the Holiday Inn Koger Center South (1021 Koger Center Blvd., Richmond, Va. 23235). Here is the agenda:

Comprehensive Plan meeting tonight

The county's citizen meeting on the new comprehensive plan coming before the Board of Supervisors this summer will be held at Midlothian High School on Thursday, January 13 at 7 PM.

There will be exhibits about the various aspects of the plan, including how it will impact the Area Plan for the Village of Midlothian.

Board of Supervisors to discuss comprehensive plan today

The Chesterfield County School Board, Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors and Chesterfield County Planning Commission will hold a joint meeting on January 12, 2011 about the comprehensive plan 1-3 p.m. in the Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center, 6610 Public Safety Way.

Parks and Rec wins four awards

DOWNTOWN (WWBT) - The city of Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities was recognized with four awards at the 56th Annual Conference of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center earlier this month.

The society’s statewide awards program honors individuals, agencies and organizations throughout Virginia that have demonstrated excellence in 17 different categories during the previous year.
