Students Jump for Richmond Animal League

Students Jump for Richmond Animal League

CIEE, Council International Educational Exchange, a non-profit sponsor of high school exchange students is working with Richmond Animal League (RAL) to raise monies for their non-euthanizing organization that helps homeless cats and dogs.

CIEE has students from Brazil, S Korea, China, Thailand, Czech, Slovakia, Spain, Germany and more in Richmond and surrounding county high schools this school year.  Each student is encouraged to participate in volunteering.  The students agreed in unison that the homeless animals need a chance!  Whether a cat or dog,  the kids feel that saving their lives and providing hope is a must.

On Sunday, April 29th, at Washington Henry Elementary School's annual Earth Day Festival, the exchange students, their host siblings, host parents and friends will JUMP ROPE raising funds for RAL's animals.  Come and join the students in jumping, pledging as little or as much as you like knowing that with each jump, RAL will ra

Adoption Specials Help RAL Achieve Record-Breaking Month in February

Adoption Specials Help RAL Achieve Record-Breaking Month in February

February was an all time record breaking month for adoptions at RAL, and the animal organization is hoping to do it all over again in March. Adoption fees for all cats and kittens have been reduced to just $10, thanks to a generous donation by Mr. C. Leland Bassett, Chairman of Fi-Tech, Inc. and all-around guardian angel for shelter cats. Mr. Bassett holds a soft spot in his heart for adult cats, which are widely accepted to be more difficult to adopt out of shelters than either canines or kittens. RAL, with the help of Mr. Bassett, is dedicated to doing whatever it takes to up its cat adoption numbers. Adult cats make great pets--they're past the rambunctious kitten stage, have learned how to use claws and teeth appropriately, and their personalities and behavior quirks are fully formed so that a potential adopter knows exactly what he or she is getting.

Meet RAL Volunteer of the Year: Sherry Campbell

The Richmond Animal League is one of the oldest and most well-renowned rescue groups in the Richmond area. We are also run almost  exclusively by over 400 volunteers who supply us with everything from fundraising and accounting to facilities management, foster care, adoption counseling and vet assisting- not to mention the twice-daily feeding, cleaning and exercising of our 20+ dogs and nearly 100 cats. Every year we highlight a volunteer who goes above and beyond for the cats and dogs of RAL; someone who embodies our mission and shows strong leadership and commitment to our work. RAL's 2011 volunteer of the year is Sherry Campbell. Sherry is the crew leader on the Tuesday and Wednesday morning cat crews, and helps showcase our adoptable cats and kittens at offsite adoption events.

Providing Hope, Help and Homes for Animals in Need

Providing Hope, Help and Homes for Animals in Need

JoJo’s story could easily have ended on a very different note. A few weeks ago, the six year old beagle with a broken pelvis sat in a kennel at Caroline County Animal Shelter, awaiting an uncertain future. Now, he’s starting out on the long road that will lead to recovery and, ultimately, adoption.

Many pets like JoJo are not so lucky. JoJo himself had more than a few strikes against him. Six years old, although barely middle aged in dog years, seems ancient to adopters hoping to come home from a shelter with a cute young puppy. And beagles, who actually make wonderful family pets because of their happy, friendly natures, still have to fight against negative stereotypes (such as “that bark”) that can sometimes lower their adoption rates.

Like many other stray dogs, JoJo is also heartworm positive, which is yet another barrier to a quick and easy adoption.
