RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A former Paper Moon employee has filed a lawsuit against the Richmond Strip Club chain, saying he was discriminated against because he was black.
The DJ claims the problems were constant at Paper Moon and now he wants a trial and $600,000 from the company. A lawyer for Paper Moon says they deny all of his claims.
The 17 page complaint has a lot of allegations. J. Alexander Jones claims he was hired to DJ and to be a promoter at Paper Moon back in November of 2010. He says during training, people made racist jokes using the words N****R, Coon, and Slave.
Jones added that he was told not to act like an "ignorant N****r" while promoting the club. He claimed he was told regular customers disliked his "Street N****r sounding voice" and that he was told to try to sound more white.
Jones also said he was told to hide when the club got crowded so customers wouldn't' see a black DJ.
Jones alleged he was asked to move to the Southside Paper Moon location because it was in a predominately black neighborhood with more minority customers. He made the switch but claimed he did not get paid for his work.
There, he said he was called names and that he was subjected to different work standards than non-black DJs.
Jones said he was not allowed to play what the manger called "black music" and that the managers continued to complain about his black voice.
A lawyer for Paper Moon said they are working to dismiss the charges and that the company denies all of Jones' allegations.
Richmond-based Paper Moon previously settled a lawsuit in Florida for racial discrimination. They paid $95,000 to two black doormen who claimed racial harassment, segregation, and different terms of employment.
