Prescription drug take-back in Chesterfield Saturday

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) – You can safely get rid of your old medications at a drug take back event Saturday. Doing so can help prevent overdoses and accidental poisonings.

You’re asked to bring all of your old medications and drop them off at the Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center. The center is located at 6610 Public Safety Way, not far from the intersection of Iron Bridge and Krause Road.

Saturday’s event lasts from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This is a partnership between the Chesterfield County Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration and SAFE.

Community Fun Day this weekend

Harbour Pointe Chiropractic and Wellness Center is hosting a Patient Appreciation and Community Fun Day on Saturday, July 16.

The event will feature food, games, prizes and more. Virginia Blood Services will also be collecting blood donations at the event.

The Patient Appreciation and Community Fun day is free and open to the public. It runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 6003 Harbour Park Drive.

Opportunities for Chesterfield seniors

Chesterfield County Senior Activity Centers offer a wide range of social and educational opportunities for residents 50 years old and older to enhance their quality of life.

Learn what is available on Thursday, June 23, 9-10 a.m., at Lucy Corr Village, 6800 Lucy Corr Blvd., when representatives from each center will give a presentation on the programs they offer and will disseminate handouts listing upcoming classes.

Discover what is offered through the Lifelong Learning Institute, Shepherd’s Center of Chesterfield, Senior Connections’ Friendship Cafes, and older adult programming through the Chesterfield Parks and Recreation Department.

This session is presented by the Chesterfield Council on Aging.

Emergency exercise today

The Chesterfield County Airport will be the setting for an emergency-scenario exercise this Saturday, June 18, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., as a test of the National Disaster Medical System. The NDMS is a federally coordinated system that assists state and local authorities in dealing with the medical impacts of major peacetime disasters and provides support to the military and the Department of Veterans Affairs in caring for casualties evacuated to the U.S. from overseas.

The Chesterfield County Airport is designated by the NDMS as a “patient receiver” site. With that designation, county public-safety departments have responsibilities to plan and practice procedures related to the NDMS.

Flush your water!

Chesterfield County water customers located along Bailey’s Bridge Road near Manchester High School, including Cameron Bay Subdivision, Bay Hill Pointe Subdivision, Bailey Bridge Middle School and Manchester High School, should flush their water lines within their homes for 2-5 minutes to ensure all sediment is removed from their home plumbing system today.

A water line damaged during construction earlier this morning may result in customers having air, discolored water or small traces of sediment in their water lines. The Chesterfield County Department of Utilities currently is flushing hydrants in the area and will continue until lines are clear. All repairs to the damaged water line have been completed.

Poison ivy, oak & sumac heavy this summer

What is it? Poison ivy, oak and sumac belong to a family of plants that produce one of the most common allergic reactions in the United States. Experts estimate that up to 70 percent of the population is allergic to urushiol, the oil found in the sap of these plants. The reaction, known as "urushiol-induced allergic contact dermatitis," occurs when urushiol attaches itself to the skin after a person's direct or indirect exposure to the oil. Symptoms like rashes, oozing blisters, itching and swelling are the body's way of telling you that you are having an allergic reaction.

Signs and symtoms of exposure: An allergic reaction to poison ivy, oak and sumac is quite intense and far more common than any other cause of an allergic skin reaction.

Seniors can drop-off unused medication May 4

Seniors will be able to discard their expired or unused prescription- and over-the-counter medicines at TRIAD Senior Day, Wednesday, May 4, 7:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m., at Victory Tabernacle Church, 11700 Genito Road, Midlothian.

Chesterfield County and the Chesterfield Substance Abuse Free Environment, Inc. will dispose of them safely, thereby preventing theft and abuse, which is a growing concern.  

The 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicated that more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens and heroin combined, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

“The 2010 survey of Chesterfield youths found that abuse of prescription narcotics and sedatives is well above the national average,” said Wayne Frith, executive director of SAFE. “Many of the medications abused come right from the family’s – or grandparents’ – medicine cabinet.
