Discover Midlothian's mining history

MIDLOTHIAN (WWBT) - Spend an afternoon at Mid-Lothian Mines and Rail Roads Park Saturday, Oct. 16, and discover the vast coal mining history that once abounded in Midlothian. From the early 1700s to the mid-20th century, Chesterfield County’s coal mines produced the first abundant supplies of coal in North America.

Free activities from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. will include guided walking tours, living history demonstrations, exhibitors and period music.

JRHS hosts Martial Arts World's National Championship & Exhibition

MIDLOTHIAN (WWBT) - Martial Arts World’s National Championship & Exhibition will be held at James River High School on Saturday October 9, 2010 from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Admission is $15 at the door ($10 prior to the event).  

More than 200 students from Martial Arts World locations across the nation, including 6 schools in the Richmond area, will be competing. Competitors range in age from 6 to 60.  This tournament is to instill confidence and self-discipline in the participants. 

Bill's Barbecue Hosts Halloween Cruise-In to Benefit Local Animal Shelter

Richmond, VA--Bill's Barbecue, a Richmond favorite since 1930, is hosting a Halloween Cruise-In to benefit Richmond Animal League (RAL).  It's a chance to enjoy an evening out with your four-legged friends, and to support the animals at RAL waiting for homes. 

The animal-friendly event will run from 4pm-10pm on Saturday, October 16th at 927 Myers Street (near Broad and Boulevard).  Bring your own pet, or come to meet a new furry friend.  There will be classic cars, motorcycles, and raffles with drawings every 30 minutes, a 50/50, and an on-site groomer from Shadycrest Grooming offering nail trims and brush-outs to pet owners who make a donation to RAL. 

Bring any item from RAL's wish list and recieve a raffle ticket for drawings that are held every 30 minutes!

Midlothian Food Festival will benefit children's charities

MIDLOTHIAN (WWBT) - The Midlothian Rotary Club, in partnership with four local rotary clubs around the Chesterfield County area, are pleased to announce the 22nd Magnificent Midlothian Food Festival, held on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 from 4:30-8:30pm at Westchester Commons, Watkins Center, Routes 60 & 288. All ticket proceeds benefit local children's charities.

Specialty foods cooked on the spot (such as crab cakes, grilled salmon and barbecue), live entertainment, wine, beer, and mixed drinks (all inclusive) all make this one of the county's most anticipated events of the year; more than 4,000 attendees are expected this year. Welcome in the fall season, come to support your favorite charity, or just give your kitchen the night off and come celebrate!

Richmond Animal League Announces Candidates for 2010 Best in Show

CHESTERFIELD (WWBT) - Richmond Animal League’s third annual Best In Show fund-raising campaign is under way.  NBC 12 reporter Sunni Blevins introduced the candidates at a kick-off held last week.  The canidates will compete to solicit the most donations over the next eight weeks, and they all have their sites set on being crowned Best in Show.  This year’s hopefuls are: Tarra Balcom, Dee Bogetti, Ashley Carroll, Suellen Christeller, Carly Keating, Heather Mullican and Natalie Wier.

Best In Show is RAL’s premier fund-raiser for covering the costs of sheltering cats and dogs awaiting adoption. Candidates receive one vote for every dollar they raise.  The candidate with the most votes will be crowned Best In Show at the campaign’s Grand Finale on Friday, November 12, at the Science Museum of Virginia. In addition to the crowning, the Grand Finale will feature live music, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction of items donated by Richmond-area merchants, among others. 

County fair attendance is up

CHESTERFIELD (WWBT) - The first five days of this year’s 9 fair dates (Friday -Tuesday), attendance is up some 10% over last year’s figures -- according to fair manage, Karen Buskey.  If the weather holds and we don’t’get rain, the fair has a chance of besting last year’s attendance mark which was the best in nearly 10 years, says Buskey. 

Virginia 125 Late Model Showdown Friday

MIDLOTHIAN (WWBT) - With 2 weeks of racing left at Southside Speedway, race fans are sure to get their money’s worth this Friday night as the Late Models will headline the night in the Virginia 125 Late Model Showdown.

After Late Model driver Shayne Lockhart’s car was disqualified following post-race inspection in last week’s 75-lap main event, Chris Dodson’s points lead grew from 260 to 740, which almost assures him of a championship with only two races remaining.
