Local Businesses Team Up to Save Lives at Richmond Animal League

Local business owner C. Leland Bassett has been making life easier for shelter cats for many years.  In 2009, Mr. Bassett provided funds for a room where adult cats at Richmond Animal League (RAL) can run, jump, eat, sleep and interact with adopters.  In 2010, Mr. Bassett donated funds for a screened porch addition to be built off of the cat room.  RAL’s Executive Director Amy McCracken expressed gratitude by saying, “This is such an incredible space for our cats to live while they are here at the shelter.  Sometimes adopters look around at all of the toys and cat trees and hammocks and joke that the cats will be sad to leave here, but we know they are all happy to get a home of their own.”

Getting shelter animals home is a shared goal of Richmond Animal League and Mr.

Richmond Animal League's 'reuse' Thrift Store Gearing up for Spring

Richmond Animal League's 'reuse' Thrift Store Gearing up for Spring

With Earth Day just around the corner, here's an idea on how to make your shopping more earth-friendly: buy used! In addition to being able to find unique, "like-new" items at great prices, buying from a thrift store instead of buying new means that an item is repurposed instead of being thrown out, thus lowering environmental impact. Richmond Animal League's thrift store, 'reuse,' has all sorts of gently used household items such as furniture, decor, books, and more. They also frequently get in pet-related products, and oftentimes have new RAL merchandise for sale as well. The store is non-profit, with all proceeds going to RAL to help fund the organization's mission of "Saving lives--providing hope, help and homes for animals in need."

Now that spring is here, reuse plans to resurrect its "Furry Fridays" program, bringing a shelter dog to visit with customers at the store every Friday.

Richmond Animal League (RAL) has been taking care of the area’s abandoned and neglected pets for over 30 years, but RAL’s longevity wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community – especially the business community. One of the local businesses that makes it possible for RAL to continue to provide hope, help, and homes for needy animals is online retailer Best Bully Sticks.

Creative Firm Going to the Dogs

Creative Firm Going to the Dogs

For all the things the cats and dogs of Richmond Animal League are—furry, cute, entertaining, loving and lovable—they are not very creative when it comes to marketing themselves to the public.  That’s where Richmond Creative firm PUNCH comes in.  PUNCH has been creating graphics, brochures, forms, event materials, and t-shirts for Richmond Animal League (RAL) for several years.  Most recently, PUNCH has re-designed RAL’s website where folks from near and far can visit the cats and dogs that are available for adoption, find out the low-cost spay and neuter clinic, and get RAL news updates.

The talented, enthusiastic staff at PUNCH have donated their services.

Three Dog Bakery Donates Dog Kibble

Three Dog Bakery Donates Dog Kibble

Three Dog Bakery reached out to the community and raised enough money to donate 600 pounds of dog food to Richmond Animal League.

The store, located in Stony Point Fashion Park, competed with other Three Dog Bakery locations in a Facebook ‘Like’ contest during the month of May.  The bakery location that received the most likes during May would get 1,000 pounds of food donated to a charity of its choice.

While competing in the Facebook event, Myra Holden, Richmond’s Three Dog Bakery owner, decided to raise more food for the shelter by allowing customers to purchase food at $2 per pound, with no limit to how much a person could purchase.

Governor McDonnell announces 140 new jobs in Chesterfield

Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that Networking Technologies and Support Inc. (NTS) will invest $1.5 million to expand its headquarters operation in Chesterfield County. The project will create 140 new jobs over the next three years.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “What began as a two-person IT company in Chesterfield County in 1997 has grown to a national business that serves 15 states. I am thrilled that NTS has maintained its Virginia roots, and with this project will expand its headquarters operations still located in Chesterfield. The addition of 140 new jobs will bring the company’s employee total to nearly 300 people. I look forward to NTS’ continued growth and success.”

“To grow from two employees to a successful company of 280 speaks volumes about NTS’ capability,” said Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade.
