Local Photographer Becky Huddleston Comes to Woofstock

Local Photographer Becky Huddleston Comes to Woofstock

If you’ve visited the Richmond Animal League’s webpage or Facebook page, you’ve probably seen some of Becky Huddleston’s work.

Huddleston, a local photographer and animal lover, has been volunteering her time and talents at the Richmond Animal League since the beginning of the year. Her photos capture the soul and spirit of the animals at RAL in a way few others do.

Pet owners will have the chance to have their pets’ portraits taken by Huddleston this Saturday at Woofstock, RAL’s annual outdoor festival held on Monument Avenue. For a $5 donation to RAL, pet parents can have their pets’ portrait taken; a digital version of the photograph will be available after the event, and additional photographs will be available for purchase in both digital and print formats.

Join Richmond Animal League on April 28th on historic Monument Avenue for a day of family and pet friendly fun.

Civil War & Emancipation Day set for April 14

Civil War & Emancipation Day set for April 14

In early February of 1865, just two months before he was assassinated, President Abraham Lincoln, signed the 13th Amendment Resolution that ended slavery in the United States. A rare copy of that document – also signed by Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, 37 senators and 111 congressmen who supported the resolution – will be on display for the first time in Virginia as part of the Third-Annual Civil War & Emancipation Day April 14 presented by The Future of Richmond’s Past.

The 13th Amendment Resolution, which is on loan from the Gilder Lehrman Collection, can be viewed from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Virginia Historical Society (and again April 15 from 1-5 p.m.).

The document is one of the highlights of Civil War & Emancipation Day, which again will commemorate the 150th anniversaries of the Civil War and the end of American slavery with a free, citywide educational experience from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Millwood School Hosts Nationally-Recognized Performance Poet

On September 26, 2011, Millwood School will host nationally-recognized performance poet, Daniel Jose Custodio, at their middle and upper school assembly.  Daniel is an award-winning slam poet, author, and teacher and is one of the most recognizable names on the spoken word scene. Daniel’s works share his experiences as a first-generation-Latino, battling socio-economic oppression, all the way up to his present-day victories as an accomplished artist who, among many successes, was the first in his family to graduate from college and graduate school.

Daniel is a four-time national slam competitor, and in 2009, Daniel and his team won the 2009 SoundBites’ Poetry Festival on Broadway. In 2008 and 2009 he won the PSi Slam Master Slam and was also the runner up in the SoundBites’ Poetry Festival individual competition.
