Bon Air brush fire extinguished

Around 11 a.m. Monday morning, a transformer blew sparking a small brush fire in the 1800 block of Buford Road in Bon Air, according to the Chesterfield Fire Department.  The size of the fire was 50x50 feet.  It was reportedly extinguished quickly.

Wings-Pizza-N-Things back out of mall

Wings-Pizza-N-Things has decided not to put a location at Chesterfield Towne Center, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The chain had planned to open at the mall in the former Spinnaker's Restaurant space. A call to the company was not returned last week.

Chesterfield Towne Center officials are in talks with several potential restaurants to go into the space, which has been vacant since November 2009, when Spinnaker's closed.

Sonic opening in Midlothian

Sonic is opening a new Chesterfield County eatery, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The drive-in restaurant chain is going into the former Pizza Hut spot at the entrance to the Chesterfield Marketplace shopping center on Midlothian Turnpike.

Sonic should open in late spring or early summer. Construction has started.

Bob Babb, owner of Zeroes Subs in Midlothian will be the first tell you -- running a small business isn't easy.

"I started in a tough time and you try to look for ever dollar you can save," he said. When a sales rep told him he could save money on his credit card processing he wanted to hear more.

Call for Artists

Unleash your creative spirit and show off your talent at Fool for Art on April 9, 2011. This annual festival, held at John Tyler Community College’s Midlothian Campus, features a variety of art and craft vendors from around the state. Artists whose applications are received by March 1, 2011 will be included in a print program and on the Fool for Art site.

In addition to the arts and crafts area, Fool for Art will include a number of environmentally-friendly activities and displays thanks to a partnership with Chesterfield County. The festival also will feature hands-on demonstrations, displays, free educational sessions, food, music and much more.

The Chesterfield County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension is presenting a Rain Barrel workshop in April and May at the county fairgrounds. Make your own rain barrel at this hands-on workshop.

Co-sponsored by the Chesterfield County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension, Friends of Chesterfields Riverfront, Chesterfield Department of Environmental Engineering, and the James River Soil and Water Conservation District, this workshop costs $35 per barrel.
